Vigorous, strong roots, I seeded indoors mid-February 2025 and set out into wide bed late May in central MN. Compared to other onions and shallots the Zittau were heartier and acclimated to their new bed much better (all my alliums had been hardened off in unheated greenhouse). Late July, some began falling over, so I pulled all. Set out on in trays in shaded North screen porch. Most necks dried very well, a couple too thick I used right away. It is now mid-January and the Zittau are holding well in unheated corner of basement along with shallots. Other varieties of onions are beginning to have green centers but no sprouts. Zittaue has no green in centers. Will grow these again since their roots were much more vigorous, and I had more large bulbs (some were smaller, that is normal) and they are holding better in storage.
